Neck pain and stiffness
Often linked to long hours at a desk, stress or sleeping awkwardly. Most neck pain settles well with the right plan.
Common conditions
- Pinched nerve
- Stiffness
- Muscle ache
- Headache
What treatment usually looks like
We assess your neck movement, muscle strength and posture to identify factors contributing to your pain. Treatment may include joint mobilisation, soft tissue techniques, targeted strengthening exercises and posture advice. Your rehabilitation is tailored to reduce discomfort, improve movement and help you manage the demands of daily activities, work and exercise.
Back pain and sciatica
The most common reason people see a Physiotherapist. Most back pain is not serious and improves with the right movement and support.
Common conditions
- Sciatica
- Stiffness
- Muscle ache
- Slipped disc
What treatment usually looks like
We assess your lower back movement, posterior chain strength and participation in everyday activities to understand your back pain. Treatment may include hands-on techniques, progressive strengthening and guidance for activity pacing. Your rehabilitation is tailored to ease symptoms, improve function and build confidence in lifting, bending, exercising and daily life.
Shoulder pain
Pain reaching overhead or behind your back, lying on that side at night, or a shoulder that has slipped out of place. Shoulders take patience, and a clear plan helps.
Common conditions
- Frozen shoulder
- Rotator cuff injury
- Dislocation
What treatment usually looks like
We assess your shoulder range, strength and adjacent joints to identify factors contributing to your pain or limitations. Treatment may include joint mobilisation, soft tissue techniques and targeted rotator cuff and shoulder blade strengthening. Your rehabilitation is tailored to restore function and help you return to work, daily activities and stability and confidence in sport.
Elbow pain
Pain on the outside or inside of the elbow when you grip, lift or type, or a strain at the front or back of the arm after a heavy lift.
Common conditions
- Tennis elbow
- Golfer’s elbow
- Bicep / triceps injury
What treatment usually looks like
We assess your elbow joint, grip strength, forearm muscle capacity and tolerance to loading to understand your symptoms. Treatment may include hands-on techniques, progressive strengthening and targeted tendon loading exercises where appropriate. Your rehabilitation is tailored to reduce pain, improve arm function and help you return to lifting, gripping, sport and everyday activities.
Wrist pain
Aching, tingling or numb fingers, or pain at the base of the thumb when you lift, grip or carry. Common in desk workers and new parents.
Common conditions
- Carpal tunnel
- Mommy’s thumb
- Wrist ache
What treatment usually looks like
We assess your wrist mobility, grip strength, joint function and tolerance to loading to identify factors contributing to your symptoms. Treatment may include joint mobilisation, soft tissue techniques and targeted functional strengthening. Your rehabilitation is tailored to improve wrist function and help you regain confidence in gripping, lifting, pushing and everyday tasks.
Hip pain
Pain in the groin, the buttock or the side of the hip, often worse on stairs, on long walks or after sitting.
Common conditions
- Buttock pain
- Osteoarthritis
- Outer hip pain
- Groin pain
What treatment usually looks like
We assess your hip mobility, strength, balance and movement patterns to understand what may be contributing to your pain or limitations. Treatment may include targeted strengthening, movement retraining and load management. Your rehabilitation is tailored to improve hip function and help you return to walking, climbing stairs, exercise and sport.
Knee pain and injury
Pain around the knee cap, a twisted knee on the court, or a strained muscle that keeps niggling. Knees respond well to loading that is progressive and measured.
Common conditions
- Knee cap pain
- Ligament injuries
- Muscle strain
What treatment usually looks like
We assess your knee mobility, muscle strength, swelling, balance and movement control to understand your symptoms. Treatment may include joint mobilisation, progressive quadriceps and hip strengthening and sport specific training. Your rehabilitation is tailored to reduce pain, restore function and build confidence in walking, climbing stairs, running and returning to sport.
Foot and ankle pain
A rolled ankle that never quite settled, pain under the foot first thing in the morning, or a sore Achilles when you run.
Common conditions
- Ankle sprains
- Plantar foot pain
- Achilles tendon pain
What treatment usually looks like
We assess your foot and ankle mobility, lower limb and calf strength, balance, walking pattern and tolerance to loading. Treatment may include joint mobilisation, soft tissue techniques, progressive strengthening, balance training and gait retraining. We tailor your rehabilitation to reduce pain, restore movement and build the strength and stability needed for daily activities and sport.
Before and after surgery
Getting stronger before an operation makes recovery easier, and structured rehab afterwards gets you back to full function. We follow your surgeon’s protocol and keep them updated.
Surgeries we rehab
- Fractures
- Shoulder dislocation
- Rotator cuff repair
- Hip & knee replacement
- ACL, PCL, MCL reconstruction
- Meniscus & cartilage repair
- Ankle ligament reconstruction
- Achilles tendon reconstruction
- Bunion correction
- Spinal decompression surgeries
- Spinal fixation surgeries
What rehab usually looks like
Before surgery, we build strength and range and show you what the first weeks will look like. Afterwards, rehab moves in stages: protecting the repair and easing swelling, rebuilding strength, then returning to work and sport.

Treatments we offer
Most plans combine two or three of these. Your Physiotherapist will explain why each one is in yours.

Pre-Operation Rehabilitation
Increase your muscle strength reserves before your operation, for a smoother post-operation experience with better results.
Often before knee, hip, shoulder and spine surgery
Post-Operation Rehabilitation
Criteria-based rehabilitation after fracture fixations, joint replacements, ligament reconstructions and spinal surgery. We will follow your surgeon's protocol and track progress at every visit.
Often after ACL, joint replacement and rotator cuff repair
Exercise Rehabilitation
A supervised exercise plan built around your injury, your goals and your schedule. We progress it session by session to recover from pain, rebuild strength and return to what you enjoy.
Often for back, knee, hip and shoulder
Oncology Rehabilitation
Gentle, structured exercise and support during and after cancer treatment. Sessions are adjusted to how you feel each week, to help manage fatigue and rebuild strength safely.
During and after cancer treatment
Manual Therapy
Hands-on joint mobilisation and soft tissue release to ease pain and stiffness to allow exercise and movement to take place comfortably.
Often for neck, back and shoulder
Home Therapy
Assessment and treatment in your own home, for when travelling to the clinic is hard. Often used in the first weeks after surgery, for older adults and for anyone with limited mobility.
For limited mobility and early post-op recovery

“My experience is with Derek. Very knowledgeable and professional Therapist. Focusses on curing the issue instead of making you come back repeatedly.”

“Highly recommend!!! Excellent all around service, from the receptionist (Gwen) to the physiotherapist (Derek)! Derek is super experienced and patient centric in his care! I had knee pain that was bothering me for so long. Went to 2 other physio, which provided me with some temporary relief after each session, but the knee pain always end up coming back! This was until I met Derek! After a few sessions, he realised the knee was not progressing as how he hypothesized and was worried it's something more structural. He recommended me to see an Orthopedic to get it check just in case. Turns out, my meniscus was torn and I had to have surgery to get it fixed! After surgery, I continued my physiotherapy with Derek while trusting the process. Today, I am finally back to running, jumping and most importantly, pain free! I'm so grateful I got to meet Derek who was so thoughtful in his analysis of my knee. If not for him, I could still be suffering from that dreadful knee pain! Thank you for always going the extra mile for us Derek!!!”

“My husband has been visiting Derek for various issues over the years. From his recommendation, I have also gone to Derek for both a hip issue and now a shoulder issue. Derek remains very thorough in understanding the issue through asking questions and sets of assessments. He is also very clear in explaining the issue, including illustrating the anatomy of things, as well as providing clear step by step guides on how to improve my situation depending on the stage of my recovery! Many thanks!”

“I first saw Derek about two years ago and Derek has been my physiotherapist for a few years now. He has always upheld a high standard of care and professionalism for his clients and strives to get them back to full speed. I have also recommended my friends and loved ones to see him for their recovery, and those of which have done so have only had positive things to say. Would recommend anyone in need of a top physio to visit PhysioFirst!”

Under his guidance and carefully crafted exercises, my arm slowly gained strength and flexibility. You are in safe hands under PhysioFirst. High recommended. Thank you Gene.”
